Bulk edit vendor and product type on Shopify

Two fields that quietly organise your whole admin — filters, automated collections and reports all read them, so duplicates are expensive.

Vendor and product type are how Shopify groups a catalog. They drive automated collection conditions, the filters in your admin, and the way sales reports break down.

After an import or a supplier rename you typically end up with two spellings of the same vendor, which splits every one of those groupings in half.

What you can change

  • Vendor → change to — merge “Northwind Co” and “northwind” into one spelling.
  • Product type → change to — move a group of products into the right category.
  • Find and replace — for systematic import artefacts.
  • Add or remove text — where a prefix crept in.
  • Both fields are product-level, so a single task covers all variants of each product.

Merge duplicate vendor spellings before they split another report.

Finding the duplicates

  • By vendor — is equal to, contains, or is empty.
  • By product type — the same operators.
  • By title — when the real category is only visible in the name.
  • By tag — if a previous cleanup left markers behind.
  • By creation date — to isolate one import.

A worked example: merge two spellings of one vendor

  1. Filter: vendor contains “northwind”, matching regardless of case.
  2. Editor: vendor → change to “Northwind”.
  3. Preview the products and confirm nothing from another supplier is caught by the filter.
  4. Run it. Automated collections and reports now group the whole range together.

Fix it before you build on it

Automated collections built on a misspelled vendor keep working until someone corrects the spelling, at which point the collection empties. Fix the data first, then point the collection at the correct value.

The same applies to product type: settle the taxonomy, then build the storefront filters on top of it.
